Who is my mother? By Darrold Hanna

Who is my mother? Milburn Minor Hanna's wife. She was supportive, helpful and kind to my father all of his life. She was a care-giving daughter and loving sister. My mother gave up high school for her brothers, who now miss her. She became a nurse so that she could help one another. My mother learned care and tenderness from our elder brother (Christ). Our mother gave our family a sister, so tiny and cute. Mother was kind & wise and settled our every dispute. For her grandchildren she watched and cared and made many a meal. But they found out they should eat it all or they would get fried oatmeal! My mother was a tireless worker, both at the hospital and at home. She cooked and cleaned, ironed and shepherded us where ever we were to roam. She never missed church or service because she loved the Lord. My mother served a mission and from her I learn to sing every chord. She was my hero, my role model, my spiritual guide. She taught me honesty & to wake up early & in the Lord abide.

Who was my mother? She is an angel showering love. I know my mother is in paradise caring and sharing with everyone above. I pray daily that we might seek that heavenly place of peace and rest. I know my mother is working & laboring and always doing her best.

With love, Dad

WHO'S WRITING HISTORY

THE OTHER DAY I WAS SUBBING, AND UPON READING THE ASSIGNMENT I REALIZED THAT I HAD BEEN BRAIN WASHED BY THE RIGHT! THAT JOLLY OLD FELLOW HOCHIMIN WAS ONLY TRYING TO UNIFY VIETNAM. WELL THAT'S WHAT THE TEXT SAID AND ALL THESE YEARS I HAD THOUGHT HE WAS A COMMUNIST DICTATOR TRYING TO TAKE OVER HIS NEIGHBOR. SILLY ME! OH, THE TEXT DID NOT EVEN MENTION COMMUNISM, HMMM. THANK YOU RUSH FOR REMINDING US DAILY THAT CHINA IS A FULL BLOWN COMMUNIST STATE RUN BY A DICTATOR. I WAS IN A 5TH GRADE ROOM A WHILE BACK AND THE STORY WE READ WAS ABOUT SOME AWFUL REBELS THAT TERRORIZED THIS NICE LITTLE LOYALIST FAMILY. US DARN AMERICANS, WE SHOULD GIVE BACK THIS NATION TO KING GEORGE! I KNOW THAT MOST THINGS ARE WRITTEN WITH THE AUTHORS BIAS ,BUT TEXT BOOKS SHOULD BE AT LEAST FAIR AND BALANCED. GET WRITING KEIRA...... (OR IS IT 'KIERA' ) WE COULD CALL THE NEW HISTORY BOOKS: "SO HELP ME, HANNA".

WITH LOVE, FROM DAD

ps: dad wrote this himself, thus the 'screaming capitals'!

Don't Look a Gift Horse In the Mouth

Okay, I'm lame! It has taken me a year to spend the $ Keira & Tia sent me for mother's day. I saved the first $ and then added this year's to finally get a new camera! The screen is much bigger & easier for these old eyes to see & it's a petite little thing, so easy to carry in a pocket or purse. So I took a picture of me taking a picture! Then I turned it on dad posing by HIS new toy purchased with his collective birthday gift $. Heis one happy guy now! In case you don't know, it's a JET drill press! Expecting nice, new pieces any day now! We both thank you all very much!

I'LL TAKE THAT WITH 'MAYO' PLEASE

The first of three ALL-DAY consultations yesterday at the world-renown Mayo Clinic in Phoenix. Good friend, Maxine Billingsley (one of the 'Cancun Chiquitas') went along as an extra pair of ears/eyes and moral support. We began at 10 am with Dr Hamawi, a nephrologist/kidney transplant specialist. He took my medical history, did a brief exam & discussed and answered our questions. He told us I'm probably one of the 30% who didn't have an 'event' that caused this kidney to fail. Since I'm the only family member (that I know of) with renal failure, we may never know how I got so lucky!
(but I can handle it!) After dr. Hamawi we had time for lunch, which we enjoyed in the beautiful sunshine out on the patio. My next appt was with Sharon Kennedy, of financial services. Following that, 1 pm was Julie Bates, Transplant Social worker, who had a large questionaire with 'probing' questions as to my readiness to have this procedure, mentally, physically & emotionally. Plus she further delved into our financial preparedness. There have been many who have been turned away, not because they can't afford the surgery, BUT because they can't afford the anti-rejection meds you must take the rest of your life. There are three anti-rej. meds, they cost $1500.00, $1562.00 & $960.00 each PER MONTH!!! Yes, insurance pays some, but even with their help it's going to be a huge burden. Not sure yet, how we'll resolve this.

Following all these appt's, we headed home (it's 70 miles each way) to be on time with my local nephrologist, Dr. Qardi. We made it on time, BUT he wasn't 'on time'! So we were running VERY late to set up our empty nester's FHE potluck. All was well in the end tho since many others lent helping hands making our St Pat's dinner fun!

So what's the time-line for the transplant? Could be as soon as 3 months but more likely 4-5 months; and that's if I have a compatible donor. If I have to be put on the 'list', it could be years!
They take one donor applicant at a time, do a phone screening interview. If that donor isn't appropriate, we move to the next one, etc. You get the idea. Donors don't have to be blood relatives or even a perfect blood type match....of course, the more matches the better. It's quite complex. Donors usually leave the hospital in a couple of days and need to 'take it easy' for a week or so (no real heavy lifting, etc.) But are back to normal very quickly.

My case will now be reviewed by a large panel of docs and specialists to move me forward in the process. I will receive a call from them with that info in probably 2 weeks. I'll let you all know when I know more. Thank you for all the prayers and fasting, I KNOW it helps and will give me strength for all that is ahead.

I must say I am VERY impressed with the Mayo Clinic. They are very organized, they were on time (even early) for my appts and very nice and forthcoming with answers & information. Now I know why I'm here in Arizona! Couldn't be a better hospital for this procedure.

Keep the prayers going and fingers crossed that they accept me as a patient and that we can figure out a way to pay for these meds!

71 CAN BE FUN....WHEN YOU HAVE A GUN

He couldn't wait to spend it! Thanks to Debbie, Sherri and Suzanne for the Cabela's gift certificate. He found the cutest little Savage 22 rifle. We went out to the shooting range saturday afternoon and broke her in. She's so smooth shooting....I enjoyed it too! It won't bring down a buffalo for dinner but it sure shot the heck out of the cardboard box we shot at!

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW?

A few pics of yard/garden. We planted the veggies on Feb 27th. We're staggering the green beans so we will have continual production. It gets too hot by July for much production except for peppers, corn & okra. We can do at least 2 gardens a year. Some friends in the ward do 3 ....actually full year round!
Square foot gardens ROCK!

Our tangelo tree with fruit & blossoms for next years fruit.
Heavenly fragrance!

Dad's giant pink grapefruit tree.

DON'T CRY FOR ME.....CASA GRANDE'

We've known for a week it was going to happen.... The bishop announced the 7 pm, sunday night meeting, where we would 'realign' ward boundaries & create a new 7th ward. We fretted all week & speculated 'who' would go 'where'. Well, I'm happy to say, dad & I didn't GO anywhere. We're still in 2nd ward, hurrah! We're still the Empty Nesters Family Home Evening Coordinators. (We really do love our calling.)
We lost about 20 families. And yes, there were some tears....I lost the best V.T. I've ever had, Betty Pearson. I always looked forward to our visits.
Why is change so hard? Particularly since 'change' is a given! I believe we have a hard time letting go of the "known" to step into the "unknown" & then there's the CONTROL issue.
Of course, now we are anticipating the division of our stake in a couple of years. That change is inevitable also. And of course, it's a good change, Right? But tears will flow again. But don't cry for me....Casa Grande', I'll be alright.
